It’s Like Riding A Bike! Weekly R.E.P.O.R.T.

Is it my athleticism or is that idiom idiotic? I really don’t remember how to ride a bike.

Reading: Book club is reading I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman this month. It is a kind of science fiction, apocalyptic narrative about 39 women and one girl who are locked in an underground cage for years and years, and explores so much about the convention of thought and knowledge. It reminds me a lot of the year of my undergrad English degree that focused heavily on literacy criticism and theory, exploring elements of semiotics and philosophy that impact how people define the world. I am enjoying it a lot so far! Will check in when I am all done. I love a thought provoking novel and this one integrates intellectualism into a unique and mysterious plot.

Eating: It’s finally hot dog season!!! I truly live my life 10 for 2; I yearn for a summer hot dog all winter long. Thank you Hashem! I have been eating at BBQs and going to sports games and eating my fair share of dogs. If anyone asks my ideal hot dog is an all beef hot dog grilled on a very soft (ungrilled) bun with ketchup and white onions (diced)! Full sour pickle on the side, please.

Playing: Season 2 of The Retrievals, a NYT podcast about investigating women’s health scandals. I think the production/journalistic quality is so good. It makes me wonder what the threshold is for a woman’s pain to be believed. The doctors in this story already knew women were reporting pain during their C-sections. Yet it took an OBGYN nurse experiencing it herself for the issue to become impossible to ignore. Unless the woman is well connected and/or educated to a degree that deems her worthy, female patients are suffering in pain, even when they advocate for themselves.

If anyone wants my NYT login to listen, I will kindly offer my password! I would love to discuss.

Obsessing over: This quote I saw on TikTok that said: “Stop keeping your old wounds fresh as evidence for a trial that will never come”.

Recommending: The WNBA! I went to a Toronto Tempo game this weekend and had the time of my life. Any time I get to watch live sports and drink beer it is the best day of my life, but when its cool women playing live sports, it is the extra best day of my life. Also, I walked right past Angel Reese (not to brag or anything).

Trying: I am learning how to ride a bike! I learned when I was a kid, but I have lost all my skills (my skills being: starting, stopping, and turning around). They say once you learn how to ride a bike you never forget, and I am proud to announce that I am the exception to that rule. I bought a bike on a Saturday thinking I could ride to work that Monday and it has been 2 weeks… I am still trying to make it out of my driveway with confidence. Send your tips, please!

Until next R.E.P.O.R.T.!
